How We Typically Eliminate Ants

We start by conducting a thorough inspection of your property to identify the type of ant species and locate the source of the infestation. We examine common entry points, nesting sites, and trails that ants use to travel within the structure. This comprehensive inspection allows us to gain a full understanding of the nature and extent of the problem.

What Attracts Ants?

These tiny creatures are highly resourceful and are constantly in search of what they need to sustain their colonies. Homes and businesses can unknowingly provide an ideal environment for ants due to the availability of food, water, and shelter. Recognizing these factors can help you identify vulnerabilities and address them proactively to creating an environment that’s less inviting to these unwelcome guests.

Several factors can attract ants to a home or business, including:

  • Food sources. Ants are particularly drawn to accessible food, especially sugary substances like syrups, fruits, and candies. Leftover crumbs, unsealed packages, pet food, and dirty dishes left in the sink can all provide a feast for ants. Even small spills of liquids such as soda or juice can attract them, as they have a strong ability to detect sugary scents from long distances.
  • Water availability. Moisture plays a significant role in attracting ants. Leaking faucets, sweating pipes, and areas of condensation create water sources that ants rely on to sustain their colonies. Bathrooms, kitchens, and basements frequently become hotspots for ants due to consistent moisture levels. Puddles from overwatered plants or clogged drains can also serve as prime locations for ants to gather.
  • Shelter and ideal conditions. Ants seek environments that provide them with safe nesting areas. They are drawn to spaces like wall voids, cracks in the foundation, or beneath flooring where they can build colonies away from disturbances. Warm temperatures combined with shelter create perfect conditions, especially during cooler months when ants seek refuge indoors.
  • Scent trails and accessibility. Once a few scout ants find what they need in a home or business, they leave behind scent trails made of pheromones that guide other ants to the resource. This process creates an amplification effect, increasing the number of ants drawn to the same area. Easy access through poorly sealed doors, windows, and vents further simplifies their entry into a building.

Signs of an Ant Infestation

While spotting an occasional ant might be completely normal, especially during warmer months or after leaving food out, consistent and repeated sightings are typically a sign of a much bigger problem. A larger infestation indicates that a colony is established nearby or even within your home or building. Understanding the specific signs of an infestation can help you know when to call in the professionals before the problem becomes more unmanageable and causes significant disruption to daily life or business operations.

Don’t wait to contact our Grand Junction ant control professionals if you spot any of the following signs of an infestation:

  • Frequent ant sightings. Regularly encountering ants in specific areas of your home or commercial building suggests more than just a casual wanderer. Ants typically travel in distinct trails, and consistently seeing them in kitchens, pantries, or other areas where food is stored points to an active infestation. This behavior signals that ants have designated the space as a resource hub, and their nest is likely working to keep the trail replenished with more workers.
  • Ant trails. Visible ant trails are one of the clearest indicators of an infestation. These are often found along the edges of walls, floors, or countertops, as ants use pheromone pathways to communicate. A well-maintained and organized trail suggests a nearby colony actively exploring and exploiting food or water resources.
  • Nests and mounds. Outdoor ant nests may consist of small piles of soil or dirt that are commonly located near foundations, driveways, or garden beds. Indoors, nests can be more difficult to find but may appear as small accumulations of debris in hidden areas, such as behind walls, under appliances, or within crevices.
  • Discarded wings. During certain times of the year, such as mating seasons, winged ants (known as swarmers) may emerge from colonies in large numbers. Finding discarded wings on windowsills, near entry points, or around baseboards indicates the presence of a mature ant colony. This often suggests that the colony is established and may even be propagating nearby.
  • Damaged food packaging. Open or loosely sealed bags, boxes, and containers in pantries or kitchens can become easy targets for ants. Small holes or visible tampering in packaging provide evidence of ants foraging for food indoors.
  • Rustling noises in walls. Certain species of ants, such as carpenter ants, can be detected through faint rustling sounds coming from within walls. These noises occur as ants tunnel and move through wooden structures and are usually more noticeable in quiet environments.

No one wants to deal with endless ants, but our team at Jerry's Pest Control can help. If you suspect you are dealing with a major infestation, call (970) 293-4999 or contact us online and request same-day support!
